Western High School Alumni Association Newsletter Spring 2021 Print

    President's Report

    Alumni Members:

It looks like things are beginning to get back to normal. My understanding in June all the restaurants will be open to full capacity. It’s been along time since we have been able to plan anything because of the Covid. We have a lot of things that we are planning on for the fall part of the year. As most of you have heard by now the reunion picnic that we have at Mike Linnig‘s is on this year. It is set for October 1 it will be from 5 to 10 pm. This is a Friday night. We try to get our Saturday but all the Saturdays were booked up between September and October. And all the Fridays or take any except for October 1. Hopefully by next year we will be able to move it back to our normal month of May. We have put together a tentative plan for what the rest of the year will be.

The nominations for the 2021 Hall of Fame will start in June and run for 2 weeks. We are planning on having a dinner sometime in September. These plans have not been set yet. At this dinner we plan on conducting the 2020 and the 2021 inductees. At this time we do not know what the price of the dinner will be. As soon as we have this information it will be put out to everyone. We are asking that anyone that is nominated for the induction please send in your accomplishments.

September will start the nominations for the vice president and the treasurer job on the executive board. We ask that anyone is interested in these jobs please fill out a résumé and send it to the school or to someone on the board. We are also still looking for help on other committees that are part of the board. We could use someone that is experience in IT and communications. We could use help with our membership committee. And other committees that we have.

September will be the month that we are planning on the Hall of Fame dinner induction. At this time we do not have information on the dates or the information as of yet. But we do plan on having it sometime in September. Again, as soon as this information is available we will put it out

October 1 is the date for the alumni picnic at Mike Linnig‘s. We will be using the new pavilion that was just built. The pavilion is behind the white building that we have used before. Again, the time will be from 5 PM to 10 PM on Friday. So come on out see some old friends, have some good food, and kick up your heels like we used to!

November 17th  will be our membership meeting for the year. At this time we will induct the new vice president and the new treasurer if we have new people. This will be also a time that you will be able to catch up on what’s going to happen the first part of next year and where the alumni is at at this time. This is an important meeting for not only the alumni but also for its members. So I hope you can mark the date once it’s been set.

We are also looking to have a big celebration for Western high school. As most of you may know this is our 60th year anniversary since the school was open. At this time I do not have very much information. We are trying to set something up with the school. So as soon as this information is available we will put it out to everybody.

These are some of the plans that we have set for later this year. Hopefully, the Covid virus will be gone or out-of-the-way. Also some of these plans can change depending on the Covid virus and where it is at this time. We can only go by the government Regulations. But we will keep everyone informed as much as possible.

Still, there are many alumni out there we want to reach and we need your help to spread the word! To help, here are some FAQ's:

    Q.  Why join WHSAA?

    A.  Some alumni join to expand their personal and business network. Others join to make an investment in current and future WHS students through financial, altruistic or mentorship opportunities.  However, the primary reason folks join is to reconnect with former classmates and friends from the past.  Why?  Because it’s FUN!  Let's hear from some of our members:

"To recapture fond memories of the past, and build a strong sense of community for the future." Diana French, Class of 1973

"To support a network of former graduates who will help raise the profile of our beloved Western High School."  Becky Williams, Class of '67

"We shared some of the most important years of our past; now it's our chance to join together to preserve that heritage, and prepare for the future" - Denise Traylor, Class of '75

    Q.  How much does it cost to join?

    A.  Lifetime membership is $75  Annual membership is 25.00 per year.

    Q.  How does WHSAA raise money?

    A.  Primarily through our membership drive, events and donations. Should you elect to make a cash donation, we are a registered 501C3 non-profit organization and your gift is tax deductible.

    Q.  Who decides how the money is spent?

    A.  The appropriation of funds is determined by the Executive Board of Directors and nine Committee Chairs and their members.  All disbursements are voted on and approved by a majority.  WHSAA officers work with faculty members on disbursements which may include grounds improvements, scholarship candidates, banquets, social media incentive programs and a host of other student, faculty and campus needs.

    Q.  What is my ROI?   (Return on Investment)

    A.  Membership and involvement with your WHSAA will prove to be time, money or talents are well invested.  Expect to experience a sense of fulfillment through involvement - from enriching the life of a student through the student relations committee to being part of a team contributing to projects or events that will raise the profile and status of Western in the community. And yes, members DO receive special rates on some events!

    Q.  Where can I plug in?

    A.  If you are interested in becoming a member you can join on-line following the membership link. If you would like information on the various committees, please contact Kim Skaggs at [email protected] or 502-550-2893.  We look forward to hearing from you.

    Financial Update

    Treasurer Report Jan- May 2021

Hello Alumni:  2021 has started slowly for us financially, although we look for things to pick up as activities begin to take shape.

If you do business with the Alumni through the website such as register and pay for an event or buy merchandise, you may notice that we don’t utilize PayPal anymore.  Our web hosting service now has their own gateway so this eliminates some fees and work!  If you experience any issues, please contact me.

Earlier this year, we provided $450 to the teachers for shirts for when they returned to school in April.  The shirts were printed with their names since there were so many new faces to the faculty.  We hope that this was a great moral booster in such a difficult year!

The financials for this year so far are included.  If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected]

    Respectully submitted,

    Alice Skaggs
